As one classic neon sign came down in Las Vegas during June, another went up in this city where the preservation of historic signage is a growing business. Vegas Vickie, the neon cowgirl that towered over Fremont Street for nearly 40 years, has been lowered from her perch and put in storage. In fact, one has just been erected on the Strip in front of Fashion Show Mall.
Some remain in the streets; many more dormant examples are lovingly preserved, restored, and occasionally electrified. Efforts to expand neon in outdoor galleries are accelerating. Seemingly, the efforts to preserve it are now commensurate to the rate with which LEDs have replaced it.
Winslow said it would be extremely expensive to retube and relight the 40 signs used in the show but by using projectors the museum's north gallery comes to life. Winslow said the magic of the show is that it is a collective experience versus something like virtual reality, which can be immersive but personal. Along with the programmed digital lighting, the minute show also features an old-school Las Vegas soundtrack that includes music from Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and Liberace.
